FAQ
Who was Joseph H. Pilates?
Joseph H. Pilates was born near Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880. He was frail as a child, and as such, dedicated his life to developing his body and improving his overall health through various activities, including gymnastics, skiing, boxing and diving. He studied Western methods of exercise, as well as Eastern methods of training, such as Yoga and Zen meditation. Disenchanted with all of these regimens, he developed his own workout system and equipment that combined both Eastern and Western philosophies.
During his internment in England during WWI, he attached springs to hospital beds for nonambulatory patients so that they could perform exercises in bed. This work created the foundation of his system, while helping patients maintain their strength and general health. The origins of the Reformer, with its spring resistance and sliding carriage, are found in the equipment developed during this period and form the basis of his apparatus work. He then brought his method to New York City in 1926. Soon thereafter, The Pilates StudioTM became popular among dancers and celebrities. Joseph Pilates lived a long life, and died in 1967 at the age of 87. Today, more than 70 years after the development of the Pilates Method, Joseph Pilates' exercises have become one of the most popular systems of core-strength training worldwide.
Will I be able to perform Pilates with existing injuries?
Because Pilates is low-impact and focused on decompression, the movements support your body's joints rather than deteriorating them. Most anyone can perform the basic movements; however, if you've had a serious injury or a recent operation, we strongly recommend consulting your doctor before beginning any new exercise regimen.
Will this program flatten and tone my midsection?
Absolutely! The focus on strengthening and lengthening core musculature inevitably results in flatter, firmer bellies.
Will I gain flexibility?
Yes. Yes. Yes. Improving flexibility is one of the principal benefits of a consistent Pilates regimen.
Will Pilates help me lose weight?
Many people do Pilates to tone their muscles, improve their posture and help them lose weight. Since Pilates creates lean muscle mass, it is one of the best ways to increase calorie burning potential. We recommend using Pilates along with aerobic exercise (running, walking, swimming, biking, etc.) and a diet prescribed by your doctor, to help burn calories and speed your metabolism.
What should I eat for doing Pilates?
Because Pilates places so much emphasis on using your abdominal muscles, you will want to have a fairly empty stomach for practicing. Remember: hydration is important before, during and after any strenuous workout.
May I continue to do weights and other exercise regimens?
Yes! In fact, the Pilates movement principles can be applied to—and will enhance—virtually any supplemental fitness program you may enjoy.
Will Pilates help me recover from a sports injury?
While nothing can replace competent physical therapy, Pilates can help in the recovery process (and prevent future injuries from occurring) through correcting muscular imbalances and movement patterns. In addition, the central focus on core stabilization can improve performance in all sports activities. Of course, the speed and degree of healing depends entirely on the extent and severity of the injury. To be safe, you should always consult with your physician first before beginning any form of exercise with injury.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, form-fitting clothing (leggings, leotards and yoga apparel). This type of dress enables the instructor to more easily see your body and to help you make specific corrections. Looser clothing is also acceptable. No shoes.
How many times a week should I take private or group sessions?
As in any physical conditioning program, to reap the full benefits, one should be practicing a minimum of two to three times a week. Pilates taken once a week will also be of great value over time. We will be happy to help you with your personal conditioning program.
